What I Didn’t Know—Until My Wake-Up Call
My mom has lived with type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. I followed her lead, trusting the advice her doctors gave her—believing that keeping my blood sugar under 125 was a healthy goal. I never questioned if those numbers were right for me—for someone without diabetes, with a totally different body, metabolism, and lifestyle.
It wasn’t until I went to a community health screening and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic that everything shifted. I realized that 125 mg/dL isn’t a healthy bedtime or wake-up reading at all—for me, or for preventing future disease. I learned that a healthy fasting blood sugar is more like 70–90, and that blood sugar is incredibly dynamic—changing hour to hour based on food, sleep, stress, and more.
That diagnosis was my wake-up call. I started digging into peer-reviewed research instead of social media trends and magazine headlines. And what I discovered was a complete 180 from what I’d been told about health, weight loss, and “normal” numbers.
That led me to the Nutritional Therapy Association, where I trained as a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I created RealFood.Coach to share what I learned—and help others change how we think about food, health, and what it really means to “listen to your body.”
Because yes, food can balance blood sugar. But it can also improve your mood, smooth out anxiety, clear brain fog, reduce bloating, support your metabolism, sharpen your thinking, and increase energy. Your needs and goals will change, and food can meet you every step of the way.
